Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Quetta, April 3 (NationPress) Tragedy struck as seven individuals lost their lives, and another four sustained injuries due to torrential rains and resulting flash floods wreaking havoc across Balochistan, Pakistan, leading to the destruction of numerous homes, livestock, and crops, as reported by local media on Friday.
The floodwaters have devastated several districts, notably Kachhi, Nasirabad, Jhal Magsi, Dera Bugti, Sibi, Harnai, Kohlu, Turbat, Jaffarabad, Loralai, and Bolan.
According to the Provincial Disaster Management Authority (PDMA), over 100 houses have been obliterated, more than 50 livestock have perished, and around 400 acres of farmland have been submerged, as reported by daily Dawn. In Harnai and Qila Abdullah alone, about 100 homes were affected, while floodwaters obstructed the Gandawah-Notal road in Jhal Magsi.
Among the casualties, two fatalities occurred due to lightning strikes in Loralai and Kachhi, with additional deaths resulting from a roof collapse in Kohlu, a wall collapse in Loralai, a drowning incident involving a child in Jaffarabad, and two individuals swept away in Kech.
Major thoroughfares have also suffered damage from the heavy downpours, with sections of the Harnai-Quetta and Quetta-Sanjawi highways being washed away, and various roads affected by the rainfall. Streams in Harnai and Chaman have seen flash floods.
The PDMA has mobilized emergency teams in collaboration with district authorities to conduct rescue and relief operations.
A mini-coach carrying 15 women and children became trapped in floodwaters in Qila Abdullah; fortunately, all passengers were rescued under the guidance of the Deputy Commissioner with the support of the PDMA. Rescue efforts are ongoing in Goth Taj Habib and Goth Balochani in Kachhi, where repairs to embankments are taking place.
Thousands of livestock have perished, and standing crops such as mustard, wheat, and chickpeas have been devastated, as reported by Dawn. Roads connecting Bolan, Yarokazoi, Notal, Gandawah, and Jhal Magsi have been severed, isolating communities and halting traffic between Sindh and Balochistan.
On March 30, the PDMA reported that at least 17 people, including 14 children, were killed, and 56 others injured following heavy rains causing roof and wall collapses in various regions of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa since March 25. The most casualties were reported in Bannu, which accounted for eight deaths, including seven children and one woman, while 42 others faced injuries.
