Hindu family of four found dead in locked Rangpur home, probe launched
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A retired Hindu schoolteacher, his wife, adult daughter, and 12-year-old son were found dead inside their locked residence in the Daspara (Machhuapara) area of Rangpur city, Bangladesh, in circumstances that authorities have described as suspicious. The bodies were recovered at approximately 11:30 pm on Saturday, prompting simultaneous investigations by the police, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), and the Detective Branch.
The Victims
The deceased have been identified as Ganapati Chakraborty, 65, a retired teacher from Rangpur Zilla School who had superannuated on 31 December last year and had since taken up homoeopathic practice; his wife, Pritilata Chakraborty, 50; their daughter, Agami Chakraborty Prarthi, 23, who had recently completed her Master's degree in English from Rangpur Carmichael College; and their son, Priyam Chakraborty, 12, a Class 5 student at Rangpur Zilla School.
How the Bodies Were Discovered
Family members grew alarmed after losing contact with the household. Puja Chakraborty, the younger sister of Pritilata, told The Daily Star that she had last spoken to her sister on Thursday afternoon, and that all four mobile phones belonging to the family had reportedly been switched off since Thursday night.
'We came to Daspara on Saturday night after finding their phones switched off. The main gate of the house was locked, and all the lights inside were off. Police later arrived, broke the lock and entered the house, where they recovered the bodies,' she said.
Nazmul Kader, officer-in-charge of Rangpur Metropolitan Kotwali Police Station, confirmed that officers entered the locked house and recovered the four bodies. The family had recently built and moved into the home in Daspara.
Where the Bodies Were Found
According to Subir Chowdhury, in-charge of Rangpur Metropolitan CID, the bodies of Pritilata and Agami were recovered from the staircase, while Ganapati's body was found on the rooftop. The body of young Priyam was discovered under a bed inside the house.
What Investigators Have Said
'For now, we have recovered the bodies of four people. We have not yet been able to establish any details about the incident,' said OC Nazmul Kader. Chowdhury added: 'We are investigating. The investigation will determine who was responsible for the killings.'
Family members have expressed shock and bewilderment over the deaths. Puja said the family could not identify any enemies or conceive of a motive. 'My sister's husband was a very good man. He had no enemies. They had built a new house in Daspara and were living there,' she said. Soma Chakraborty, Ganapati's niece, echoed this, stating she had last spoken to her uncle on Thursday afternoon and that he was widely regarded as a man without adversaries.
Investigation Ongoing
The exact cause of death, motive, and timeline of the killings have not yet been established by authorities. Police, the CID, and the Detective Branch are continuing to examine the scene and gather information. This incident comes amid a broader context of reported tensions faced by minority communities in Bangladesh, and is expected to draw significant attention from human rights observers and diplomatic quarters. The outcome of the investigation is being closely watched.
