Dhaka, Dec 23 (NationPress) A woman has been apprehended by police in Bangladesh regarding the shooting incident involving a leader of the National Citizen Party (NCP), as reported by local media on Tuesday, referencing an official statement.
The victim, Mohammad Motaleb Sikder, who serves as the Khulna divisional chief of the NCP and is a central organizer of NCP Sramik Shakti, was shot on Monday at a residence close to Gazi Medical College Hospital in the Sonadanga district of Khulna city.
This event occurred shortly after the shooting of radical Islamist figure Sharif Osman Hadi on December 12 in Dhaka.
Police confirmed the arrest, stating that Taimur Islam, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of the Detective Division (DB) in Khulna Metropolitan, reported that the suspect was taken into custody from the Sadar Police Station vicinity on Monday night.
The woman, identified as Tanima, also known as Tanvi, has limited details released about her identity.
According to multiple local sources, the leading Bangladeshi newspaper Prothom Alo mentioned that Tanima is the joint member secretary of the Khulna district branch of NCP's youth wing, Jubo Shakti.
Reports indicate that Sikder was shot at Tanima's rented accommodation in Sonadanga on Monday and was subsequently rescued by locals, who transported him to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) in a critical state.
KMCH Superintendent Md Akhtaruzzaman stated that Sikder is now out of danger.
"The bullet struck the left side near his ear and exited without penetrating the skull. His scalp was injured, but he is stable and out of danger," the doctor added.
Meanwhile, police have initially categorized the shooting as a domestic dispute after investigations revealed that it occurred inside a rented home in Sonadanga.
Sikder initially informed police that assailants on a motorcycle shot him while he was on the street. However, investigators later verified that the assault took place within the house.
Deputy Commissioner (South) of Khulna Metropolitan Police, Mohammad Tajul Islam, commented, "Upon our arrival at the building known as Mukta House, we discovered bloodstains in various locations. Inside the residence, we found drugs scattered about - including foreign liquor bottles, yaba consumption tools, and a bullet shell. We have confirmed that the shooting stemmed from an internal conflict among those present. We are currently verifying who was involved and who frequented the location."
Bangladesh is experiencing an increase in violence and a deteriorating law and order situation under the interim government led by Mohammad Yunus.
