Was the Murder of B’desh Student Leader Hadi Politically Motivated with a Conspiracy Originating in Singapore?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Jan 7 (NationPress) The police in Bangladesh have classified the assassination of Islamist student leader Sharif Osman Hadi as a politically motivated crime, asserting that the plot behind the murder was orchestrated in Singapore.
The Dhaka Metropolitan Police’s (DMP) Detective Branch has submitted a chargesheet against 17 individuals in connection with this case to a metropolitan court in Dhaka.
According to law enforcement, the murder was executed under the orders of former Mirpur councillor Taizul Islam Chowdhury, also known as Bappi, motivated by political hostility. Officials described the incident as an act of political vengeance.
Elaborating on the motive, Md Shafiqul Islam, Additional Commissioner of the DMP Detective Branch, stated on Tuesday that Hadi’s political activism had brought him into direct opposition with leaders of the now-disbanded Awami League and its student faction.
“Through public demonstrations and social media, Hadi sharply criticized the actions of the now-disbanded Awami League and Chhatra League. His outspoken comments provoked anger among leaders and activists of the Chhatra League and its affiliates,” Islam was quoted as saying by tbsnews.net.
The Bangladesh Chhatra League is the student organization linked to dislodged prime minister Sheikh Hasina’s Awami League. Following the murder, several suspects reportedly fled Bangladesh, allegedly crossing into India via the Meghalaya border.
During a press briefing after the chargesheet submission, Islam mentioned, “Given the political affiliations of the suspects and the victim’s prior political remarks, the investigation indicates that Hadi was murdered due to political retribution.”
The chargesheet identifies 17 suspects, including the primary suspect Faisal Karim Masud, according to The Dhaka Tribune. Police confirmed that 12 suspects have been apprehended, while five remain at large.
Investigators revealed that a crucial meeting to strategize the assassination occurred in Singapore, attended by former MP Elias Mollah, former councillor Taizul Islam, shooter Faisal Karim Masud, among others. Masud is a former Chhatra League leader, while another suspect, Alamgir Sheikh, is associated with the Youth League. A third individual, known only as Philip, was also implicated in the shooting. All three suspects are currently evading capture.
Hadi, aged 32, was a spokesperson for Inqilab Moncho and gained national prominence during the mass protests in July–August 2024 that ultimately led to the downfall of the Hasina-led government. He was also a candidate in the February 12 elections. Hadi was recognized for promoting Islamist and anti-India narratives within the South Asian region.
On December 12, Hadi was shot in the head by assailants on a motorcycle while riding in a rickshaw on Paltan Road in Dhaka. He was later airlifted to Singapore for medical care but succumbed to his injuries on December 18.
