Washington, Jan 16 (NationPress) In a major milestone after months of rigorous diplomatic negotiations, Israel and Hamas have finalized a ceasefire and hostage agreement. Facilitated through the efforts of the US, Egypt, and Qatar, this pact aims to end the persistent violence in Gaza, enable essential humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians, and secure the return of hostages who have been imprisoned for over 15 months.
President Joe Biden reflected on the arduous journey to this agreement, stating that this was among the most challenging negotiations he has faced throughout his career.
"The path to this agreement has not been straightforward. With decades of experience in foreign policy, I can assert that this has been one of the most difficult negotiations I've encountered. We have reached this agreement due to the pressure Israel exerted on Hamas, with backing from the United States," Biden noted on social media platform X.
The US leader underscored the significance of this deal, which was initially proposed in May 2024 and later supported by the UN Security Council.
Biden detailed the critical elements that contributed to this agreement, highlighting the considerable pressure Hamas faced as a result of Israel's military operations, alongside the evolving regional dynamics.
"This outcome is the result of not just the intense pressure on Hamas but also the shifting regional landscape following a ceasefire in Lebanon and a decline in Iran's influence — coupled with relentless and meticulous American diplomacy. My diplomatic efforts have remained unwavering in pursuing this outcome," he stated.
The ceasefire agreement is viewed as a pivotal move towards ending the violence that has plagued Gaza. Biden remarked, "While we celebrate this achievement, we must also remember the families who lost loved ones in the October 7th attack by Hamas, as well as the many innocent lives lost in the ensuing conflict."
Biden expressed profound compassion for American families affected by the hostage situation, assuring that efforts will persist to guarantee the safe return of all hostages. "I am also thinking of the American families, three of whom have hostages in Gaza and four awaiting the return of remains after enduring a truly horrific ordeal," he conveyed.
Despite celebrating the successful deal, Biden reiterated the continuous effort required to establish enduring peace and security in the region.
