Colombo, July 21 (NationPress) A serious incident occurred this morning in Kegalle, located in the Sabaragamuwa province of central Sri Lanka, where twenty-one individuals suffered injuries from a head-on collision between a private bus and a state-operated Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) bus, as reported by local police.
The collision transpired around 5 am, and those injured are currently receiving medical attention at two nearby regional hospitals.
The Kegalle police have initiated an investigation into this unfortunate event.
In a related occurrence on June 18, approximately 23 people were hurt when a passenger bus collided with a container truck in the Ratnapura district of south-central Sri Lanka, according to police reports.
As a result of the accident, traffic on the Colombo-Ratnapura main road was disrupted for about an hour.
All injured individuals were transported to a regional hospital, with local media indicating that none of them are in critical condition.
Furthermore, reports from the Xinhua news agency indicate that as of April 2 this year, a total of 592 Sri Lankans have lost their lives in 565 fatal road accidents.

Reviewing annual statistics, Hapugoda mentioned that 2,341 lives were lost in 2,231 fatal road incidents in 2023, while the numbers rose in 2024 with 2,541 deaths from 2,403 fatal accidents.
He emphasized that 7,127 individuals sustained serious injuries in fatal accidents in 2024, many of whom may require long-term medical care or face permanent disabilities.
