Yaounde, Aug 10 (NationPress) Former Chadian Prime Minister Succes Masra has been sentenced to 20 years in prison by a criminal court located in the capital N'Djamena.
The court found Masra guilty of inciting public hatred and hostility, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
Masra’s legal team described the ruling as an ignominy and confirmed plans to appeal.
In a statement following the verdict, Kadjilembay Francis, Masra’s attorney, remarked: “He has just faced ignominy and unworthy humiliation.”
Masra was apprehended in May after a governmental investigation suggested that he incited violence, resulting in the deaths of 42 individuals during clashes in Mandakao village, situated in the southwestern province of Logone Occidental.
As the president of the opposition party The Transformers, Masra had gone into exile in 2022 but returned to serve as prime minister under President Mahamat Idriss Deby Itno.
After a five-month term, he resigned in 2024 to facilitate the formation of a new government.
Masra, who led as prime minister from January to May last year, has consistently criticized the current president, Mahamat Deby, who took power in 2021 following the death of his father, Idriss Deby Itno, a long-time ruler of Chad.
Idriss Deby was killed while combating rebels in the northern region of the country after ruling for 30 years.
Earlier this year, Mahamat Deby sought to legitimize his presidency through an election, which faced opposition from Masra and his political party.
