Why is China Criticizing the US Over Venezuela While Overlooking Uyghur Abuses?

The disparity in global outrage raises concerns about the integrity of international law.

Beijing, Jan 31 (NationPress) China has denounced the US forces' apprehension of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro as a “hegemonic act that undermines global standards.” However, to those aware of Beijing’s treatment of the Uyghurs, this response is not only hypocritical but also disturbing, according to a report released on Saturday.

“In capturing Maduro, the Trump administration deployed a modest contingent of personnel by air, land, and sea. The operation was completed in just two hours and twenty-eight minutes. Conversely, China mobilized tens of thousands of police and hundreds of thousands of government officials to detain over three million Uyghurs. While Trump’s forces approached a presidential palace, Chinese officers invaded homes under the cover of darkness, breaking down doors and instilling fear by entering without notice,” wrote Shohret Hoshur, a Uyghur American journalist, for the online magazine ‘Bitter Winter’.

“While Trump’s troops stormed the residence of a president shielded by guards, Chinese armed police invaded the homes of defenseless civilians—men, women, and the elderly—whose only defense might have been a dog in the yard. Maduro was captured and swiftly taken by helicopter. In contrast, Uyghurs were often hooded; when hoods weren’t available, officers would cover their heads with their coats and forcibly drag them away,” he added.

Hoshur highlighted that in Maduro’s situation, detention was quickly followed by legal procedures—within three days of arriving in New York, he faced a court. Additionally, within a week, Maduro had the opportunity to see his son, while the world was informed of the reasons for his detention.

However, Uyghurs sent to detention camps faced no legal process—no warrants, charges, or trials whatsoever.

“Families were left in uncertainty. Detainees often had no understanding of why they were taken, other than their identity as Uyghurs, the inhabitants of the resource-abundant region historically known as East Turkestan,” he added.

The report also noted that following Maduro’s apprehension, the Trump administration candidly acknowledged its interest in Venezuelan oil, suggesting mutual benefits for both countries.

In contrast, China has subtly capitalized on the oil, gas, and natural resources of East Turkestan while claiming to merely “support Xinjiang economically,” without clarifying where the profits are allocated.

“If global outrage is directed only at presidents while millions of civilians can be taken hostage in silence, the issue transcends political hypocrisy—it signifies a degradation of international law itself,” the report concluded.

Point of View

I must emphasize that while countries often play the blame game, it is crucial to reflect on their own actions. China’s criticism of the US regarding Venezuela, juxtaposed with its treatment of Uyghurs, highlights a significant contradiction in international relations that we must scrutinize.
