Seoul, Nov 26 (NationPress) On Wednesday, a special counsel team in South Korea officially indicted the head and deputy head of the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials (CIO) without detention, facing charges of dereliction of duty linked to their investigation into the tragic 2023 death of a young Marine.
This incident represents the first occasion since the agency's formation in 2021 that its leadership has faced indictment.
CIO Chief Prosecutor Oh Dong-woon and Lee Jae-seung, the agency's deputy chief, stand accused of neglecting to inform the Supreme Prosecutors' Office for nearly a year when a CIO prosecutor was implicated in a criminal complaint back in August of last year, a legal obligation they failed to meet.
Lawmakers from the Democratic Party lodged the complaint against former CIO prosecutor Song Chang-jin, alleging he provided false testimony under oath at the National Assembly regarding an individual involved in the Marine death case, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
The special counsel team, investigating potential interference by former President Yoon Suk Yeol's administration in the Marine death case, suspects that no action was taken on the complaint because the agency perceived it as a political assault against its leadership.
Additionally, the team posits that certain CIO officials, including Song, obstructed the investigation concerning the Marine death case, seemingly to shield Yoon from scrutiny.
The team has also indicted Song for alleged abuse of authority, accusing him of hindering attempts to obtain search-and-seizure warrants against Yoon and former Defence Minister Lee Jong-sup related to the case.
This development follows the prior indictment of Yoon last week, accused of exerting inappropriate pressure on military investigations related to Cpl. Chae Su-geun's death in July 2023.
