Is There a Human Rights Crisis in Bangladesh Following a Death in Army Custody?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Paris, Jan 31 (NationPress) A prominent human rights organization has voiced serious concerns regarding the death of a young man in Bangladesh's Satkhira district, reportedly due to severe torture inflicted by personnel of the Bangladeshi Army.
Citing eyewitness accounts, the Justice Makers Bangladesh in France (JMBF) stated that 22-year-old Ismail Hossain was riding a motorcycle without a helmet toward the Kakbashia Bazar area in Satkhira with two friends on January 29.
The rights organization further noted that the group was stopped by an army patrol team near the market, where army personnel allegedly subjected Hossain to brutal assault, resulting in his immediate death.
Following the incident, JMBF reported that the patrol team quickly departed the scene, leading to heightened tensions among local residents as news spread.
The victim's family and the local community have called for a thorough and unbiased investigation, alongside strict punishment for those accountable.
The JMBF highlighted that the death resulting from torture by military personnel represents a serious violation of fundamental human rights as outlined by the United Nations and contravenes international human rights laws.
Moreover, the organization stated, “Any instance of extrajudicial violence or death carried out by law enforcement or security forces is profoundly concerning for a democratic nation committed to human rights. Such actions devastate families and severely erode public trust between the state and its citizens.”
Shahanur Islam, Founder President of JMBF, remarked, “The allegation surrounding the death of an unarmed young man in Ashashuni raises critical questions about the rule of law and the human rights climate in Bangladesh. Extrajudicial violence from law enforcement agencies is absolutely intolerable.”
“These events do not just affect one family; they destroy public confidence in the government. We demand a completely independent, unbiased, and internationally compliant investigation into this death, alongside stringent criminal penalties for all found responsible. Without justice, such violence will persist,” he added.
The JMBF urged the United Nations Human Rights Council, international and regional human rights bodies, as well as all foreign diplomatic missions in Bangladesh, to take decisive action following a “comprehensive and credible investigation” into this tragic incident.
