Democratic Party of South Korea to Advocate for President Yoon's Impeachment Vote Weekly

Seoul, Dec 8 (NationPress) The leading liberal opposition party in South Korea, known as the Democratic Party, declared on Sunday its plan to regularly propose a vote for the impeachment of President Yoon Suk-yeol every Saturday, in light of a failed initial impeachment attempt.

Kang Yu-jung, the spokesperson for the Democratic Party, informed journalists that a new impeachment motion is set to be presented to the National Assembly on Thursday, with a vote scheduled for Saturday.

Kang emphasized that the party will persist with the report on Thursday and the subsequent vote on Saturday to pursue impeachment against Yoon, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The initial impeachment motion aimed at Yoon was abandoned when a majority of the 108 lawmakers from the ruling People Power Party chose to boycott the proceedings on December 7.

To successfully pass an impeachment motion concerning Yoon's declaration of an emergency martial law—which was later revoked by the parliament—over 200 votes from the total of 300 National Assembly members are required.

The Democratic Party plans to introduce legislation on Monday to appoint special prosecutors and investigate allegations of Yoon's insurrection and a scandal involving his wife, aiming to present this for a potential vote as early as Thursday, according to the spokesperson.

According to the proposed independent counsel legislation, which cannot be vetoed by the beleaguered president, the opposition holds the authority to recommend a special prosecutor; however, the president can postpone the prosecutor's appointment.

In addition, the Democratic Party will submit motions to impeach the justice minister and police chief to the parliament on Tuesday, with plans to vote on these motions by Thursday.
