Seoul, May 23 (NationPress) The Democratic Party (DP) presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung is currently leading his opponent from the People Power Party (PPP), Kim Moon-soo, with a notable support rate of 45 percent compared to 36 percent, according to a recent survey conducted on Friday.
This poll, carried out by Gallup Korea, involved 1,002 adults between Tuesday and Thursday, revealing that Lee Jun-seok from the minor New Reform Party (NRP) holds the third position with 10 percent support. Furthermore, 8 percent of respondents remained undecided.
In comparison to the previous week, support for DP's Lee has decreased by 6 percentage points, while both Kim and Lee Jun-seok have seen their support rise by 7 percentage points and 2 percentage points, respectively.
Currently, the Democratic Party boasts a support level of 42 percent, overshadowing the People Power Party which stands at 36 percent.
The margin of error for this survey is 3.1 percentage points at a 95 percent confidence level, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
On the same day, four presidential contenders are preparing to debate social issues in their second televised debate, with the election date of June 3 fast approaching in just 11 days.
Lee Jun-seok of the NRP has marked his first double-digit support, while Kim seeks to persuade the NRP candidate to unify their candidacies to more effectively challenge DP's Lee.
Previously, on Thursday, NRP's Lee announced that he would maintain his candidacy until Election Day.
The debate will feature the three candidates alongside Kwon Young-kook from the minor Democratic Labor Party, taking place at 8 p.m. and hosted by the National Election Commission.
Throughout this debate, candidates will engage in discussions aimed at addressing social divisions, promoting national unity, as well as tackling issues related to pensions, healthcare reforms, and climate change.
DP's Lee is anticipated to articulate his vision of becoming a leader capable of bridging ideological and regional divides, emphasizing social cohesion as a key responsibility of the president.
Conversely, Kim from the PPP is likely to highlight his personal integrity, contrasting with his DP competitor who is embroiled in several legal disputes, while criticizing Lee's policy vision of a 'basic society' as populist in nature.
NRP's Lee is also expected to focus on DP's controversies, including allegations of election law violations and misuse of public funds.
During the debate, Kim and NRP's Lee may engage in a heated discussion regarding the potential merging of their candidacies.
This upcoming election will determine the successor to former South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol, who faced impeachment due to a failed martial law attempt last December.
