Jaishankar to visit Azerbaijan on Oct 23 to review bilateral ties
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar will undertake an official visit to Azerbaijan on 23 October 2026, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed on Thursday. The visit is aimed at holding diplomatic talks with his Azerbaijani counterpart and conducting a comprehensive review of bilateral relations between the two nations.
Key Agenda for the Visit
During his stay, Jaishankar is scheduled to meet Azerbaijan's foreign minister to assess the current state of India-Azerbaijan ties and explore avenues for deepening cooperation across multiple sectors. The visit comes at a time of growing diplomatic momentum between New Delhi and Baku, following a series of high-level engagements in recent weeks.
India's Diplomatic Footprint in Azerbaijan Expands
On 16 October, India's newly appointed Ambassador to Azerbaijan, Abhay Kumar, presented his credentials to Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev. The Indian Embassy in Azerbaijan noted that Kumar 'conveyed his commitment to working towards the further strengthening and expansion of bilateral relations between India and Azerbaijan' and 'affirmed that he would spare no effort to promote closer cooperation between the two countries and to deepen the longstanding bonds of friendship and mutual understanding between their peoples.'
According to the embassy, discussions during the credential presentation 'highlighted the enduring historical and cultural connections between India and Azerbaijan, which have developed over millennia and continue to provide a strong foundation for contemporary bilateral engagement.' Both sides also 'exchanged views on the prospects for expanding cooperation across various spheres of mutual interest.'
Modi-Aliyev Meeting Cited as Foundation
The embassy statement also referenced the bilateral meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Aliyev in Bishkek on the sidelines of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit on 1 September. Ambassador Kumar and President Aliyev reportedly renewed their commitment to advancing cooperation, emphasising the importance of building on 'existing foundations of friendship, historical connections and mutual goodwill to explore new avenues of engagement.'
India's Recent Engagement with Baku
Jaishankar's visit follows a visit by Union Minister of State for External Affairs Kirti Vardhan Singh to Azerbaijan just last week. Singh attended the Seventh Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) in Baku on 15 October, where he underscored India's vision of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' — the world as one family — as a framework for peace, cooperation, and countering cross-border terrorism. In a post on X, Singh stated: 'Addressed the Plenary Session of the 7th Summit of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), held at Baku, Azerbaijan. Emphasized India's vision of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' (The World is One Family) for peace, cooperation, friendship and countering shared challenges. Called upon all Member States to unite against cross border terrorism.'
The back-to-back visits by senior Indian officials signal a deliberate diplomatic push to consolidate New Delhi's engagement with Baku, with Jaishankar's trip set to give the relationship its highest-level political momentum to date.
