New Delhi, Jan 18 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar engaged in discussions with US Senator Steve Daines in the capital on Sunday, focusing on the importance of bilateral relations and their strategic implications.

After their talks, EAM Jaishankar shared on X, "It was a pleasure meeting Senator Steve Daines this morning in Delhi. We had an extensive and open dialogue concerning our bilateral relationship and its strategic importance."

On the following Tuesday, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio held a phone conversation with EAM Jaishankar, examining key cooperative areas such as civil nuclear energy, trade discussions, and regional security within the Indo-Pacific.

“We talked about trade, critical minerals, nuclear collaboration, defense, and energy. We agreed to keep communication open regarding these topics,” EAM Jaishankar noted on X after the call.

US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor described the call as favorable.

“They discussed future steps concerning our bilateral trade negotiations, critical minerals, and a possible meeting scheduled for next month,” Gor mentioned on X.

During the call, Rubio congratulated India on the passage of the Sustainable Harnessing and Advancement of Nuclear Energy for Transforming India bill, which is part of India's nuclear energy framework, as stated by Principal Deputy Spokesperson Tommy Pigott.

He emphasized that the United States aims to build on this legislation to enhance civil nuclear cooperation between the two nations.

“He showed interest in leveraging this significant development to bolster US-India civil nuclear collaboration, expand opportunities for American enterprises, advance shared energy security objectives, and secure critical mineral supply chains,” Pigott stated.

The two diplomats also deliberated on ongoing negotiations for a bilateral trade agreement and their mutual interest in enhancing economic collaboration.

“They exchanged viewpoints on regional developments, reaffirming their commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific,” Pigott added.

In the meantime, US Ambassador to India Sergio Gor presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu at a ceremony at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 14.

"Today, I presented my credentials as US Ambassador to India to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan. I am thankful to President Trump for his trust and confidence, and I am proud to advance his Administration's priorities.
