Tourism Minister Huot Hak shared on social media, "A significant number of both domestic and international visitors assembled to seize the opportunity for unforgettable photos of the sunrise perfectly aligned with the central tower of Angkor Wat."
He further noted, "The equinox sunrise represents a remarkable and rare occurrence that takes place only twice annually."
The APSARA National Authority (ANA), the governmental body tasked with the management, protection, and preservation of the Angkor Archaeological Park in Siem Reap province, stated that the Angkor equinoxes occur biannually.
The first phenomenon, known as the Vernal Equinox, takes place between March 21 and 23, while the second, referred to as the Autumnal Equinox, occurs between September 21 and 23, as reported by Xinhua, referencing a news release from the ANA.
The ANA explained, "The Angkor equinox is a time when the sun rises directly above the central tower of Angkor Wat, creating a stunning display that our Khmer ancestors gifted to the world, offering insights into both spirituality and science."
Angkor Wat stands as one of the principal temples within the UNESCO-designated Angkor Archaeological Park, which spans 401 square kilometers and is home to 91 ancient temples built from the ninth to the thirteenth centuries.
This premier tourist destination in Southeast Asia attracted a total of 955,131 international visitors in 2025, generating a remarkable gross revenue of 44.7 million US dollars from ticket sales, according to the state-owned Angkor Enterprise.
