Erdogan and UN Chief Guterres Discuss Syrian Crisis in Phone Call

Ankara, Dec 6 (NationPress) Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres engaged in a phone conversation focusing on the recent developments in Syria, according to an announcement from Erdogan's office.

During their discussion on Thursday, Erdogan emphasized Turkey's dedication to ensuring stability in Syria, reiterating that Ankara's main goal is to avert further instability and civilian casualties in the area, as stated.

"The Syrian government must urgently engage with its own people to work towards a comprehensive political solution," the Turkish President remarked.

In a subsequent UN press briefing, Guterres noted that he stressed the urgent requirement for immediate humanitarian access to all civilians in need and a return to the UN-facilitated political process to halt the violence, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

The UN Chief also underscored that all parties are bound by international law to safeguard civilians.

"It is time for serious dialogue," he stated, adding, "In other words, restoring Syria's sovereignty, unity, independence, and territorial integrity, and addressing the legitimate aspirations of the Syrian people."

Since November 27, Syrian rebel factions, led by the Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), have initiated a significant offensive in northern Syria, aiming to penetrate government-controlled territories.

As of Thursday, the rebel groups have captured key cities such as Aleppo and Hama. This unexpected rebel offensive has occurred while Syria continues to grapple with the aftermath of a 13-year civil war.
