Ethiopia Expands Electric Vehicle Adoption Across More Cities

Addis Ababa, Jan 2 (NationPress) Ethiopia is set to enhance the presence of Electric Vehicles (EVs) in cities throughout the nation, as announced by government representatives on Thursday.
A variety of initiatives are being planned to replace approximately 1.5 million fossil fuel-powered vehicles with EVs, as reported by the state-owned Fana Broadcasting Corporate.
Bareo Hassen, the state minister of transport and logistics, mentioned that the capital city, Addis Ababa, along with the northern tourist destination Gondor, is already utilizing EVs for public transportation.
There are ongoing efforts to broaden electric mobility to additional cities, with charging stations being set up in Dire Dawa, Harar, and Jigjiga in eastern Ethiopia, he stated.
Ethiopia's goal is to transition around 432,000 fossil fuel-driven vehicles to EVs within a decade, as noted by Hassen, who highlighted that the East African nation has successfully operated over 100,000 EVs nationwide in the last two and a half years, according to the Xinhua news agency.
The government is also focused on boosting EV production and establishing public charging stations, providing support and various incentives for private investors, including free or leased land for EV after-sales service facilities, it was mentioned.
In line with its commitment to a green transition, the government has declared a prohibition on the importation of gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles.
