EU Leaders Commit to Monitoring Migratory Risks Amid Middle East Conflicts
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Brussels, March 20 (NationPress) Leaders of the European Union (EU) have committed to maintaining a watchful eye on potential spillovers from conflicts in the Middle East that may create migratory pressures on the region, as these conflicts present increasing threats to Europe.
While the ongoing conflict "has not yet resulted in immediate migratory movements towards the EU," leaders at a European Council gathering emphasized "the necessity of sustaining a heightened level of vigilance and ensuring adequate preparedness," as indicated by the conclusions reached post-summit.
Informed by the experiences of the 2015 migration crisis, the EU stated its readiness to "completely mobilize its diplomatic, legal, operational, and financial resources" to avert migratory flows towards the EU and safeguard security within Europe. "The security and management of the EU's external borders will be further enhanced," the conclusions highlighted.
Additionally, the leaders called for de-escalation and utmost restraint in the Middle East conflict, urging all involved parties to adhere strictly to international law and supporting a halt on strikes targeting energy and water facilities.
In efforts to strengthen the EU's maritime strategy, the leaders stressed the need to allocate further resources to bolster its two existing maritime security operations, EUNAVFOR Aspides and EUNAVFOR Atalanta.
Both EUNAVFOR Aspides and EUNAVFOR Atalanta are EU military initiatives aimed at ensuring maritime security, encompassing operations across the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean, and the Gulf region, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
The 2015 migration crisis, triggered by the war in Syria and the instability in both Afghanistan and Iraq, led to over one million refugees and migrants entering Europe, which overwhelmed border and asylum frameworks, sparked emergencies, and exacerbated political divisions within the EU.
During the European Council meeting on Thursday, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called upon the United States and Israel to cease hostilities with Iran and advocated for diplomatic efforts to supplant military actions.
