Brussels, April 8 (NationPress) European leaders expressed their approval on Wednesday regarding the newly established two-week ceasefire between the United States and Iran, highlighting the European Union's commitment to enhancing peace efforts in the Middle East.

European Council President Antonio Costa called on all involved parties to adhere to the ceasefire conditions to foster long-term peace in the area, reiterating the EU's dedication to facilitating peace in the region.

"I applaud the announcement made by the United States and Iran regarding a two-week ceasefire. I urge all involved to respect the terms set forth in order to realize sustainable peace in the region. The EU is prepared to assist ongoing initiatives and maintains close communication with regional partners. I appreciate Pakistan and all others who contributed to facilitating this agreement," Costa remarked on X.

Meanwhile, Ursula von der Leyen, President of the European Commission, noted that the ceasefire agreement reached between the US and Iran signifies a much-needed de-escalation. She emphasized that negotiations remain crucial for achieving a lasting resolution to the ongoing conflict.

"I welcome the two-week ceasefire that the US and Iran agreed upon last night. This development signifies a vital de-escalation," Leyen tweeted on X. "It is now essential that discussions for a long-term resolution to this conflict persist. We will continue to work in coordination with our allies toward this goal," she added.

The EU's High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, referred to the ceasefire agreement between Iran and the US as a "step back from the edge after weeks of rising tensions." She urged for the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz for safe passage.

"The US–Iran ceasefire agreement marks a retreat from the edge after a prolonged period of escalation. It provides a much-needed opportunity to reduce threats, halt missiles, resume shipping, and foster diplomatic space for a lasting agreement. The Strait of Hormuz must be reopened for navigation," Kallas stated on X.

The EU leaders' remarks followed US President Donald Trump's decision to halt a significant military escalation with Iran, announcing a conditional two-week pause in planned attacks relating to reopening the Strait of Hormuz, a news that offered considerable relief globally.

The announcement was made just 90 minutes before the self-imposed 8 pm EST Tuesday deadline set by Trump for Iran to engage in discussions, following backchannel negotiations.

In a post on Truth Social, Trump declared he would "suspend" any escalation of attacks for a two-week period if Iran agrees to reopen the vital shipping route.
