Indonesia Applauds US-Iran Ceasefire as Step Toward Peace
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jakarta, April (NationPress) Indonesia has expressed its approval of the recently declared ceasefire between the United States and Iran, calling it a significant move toward reducing tensions.
According to Yvonne Mewengkang, spokesperson for Indonesia's Foreign Ministry, this development is viewed as a favorable start, encouraging all parties involved to seize this chance to pursue a long-lasting peaceful resolution.
Yvonne emphasized that dialogue and diplomacy are the only viable paths to resolve the ongoing conflict.
She further highlighted the critical need to uphold the freedom of navigation as outlined by international law, assuring that Indonesia will persist in supporting constructive diplomatic initiatives, with a focus on civilian protection, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Earlier that day, US President Donald Trump announced a two-week suspension of planned military action against Iran, linking this pause to Iran’s commitment to reopen the Strait of Hormuz and ongoing discussions for a broader peace agreement.
This announcement marks a temporary reprieve from what could have escalated into a significant military confrontation in the Gulf, with Trump claiming that US military objectives had already been met.
Additionally, Israel voiced its support for the US's decision to halt military operations against Iran, while clarifying that the two-week ceasefire does not apply to Lebanon.
India also welcomed the ceasefire and expressed optimism that it would pave the way for enduring peace in the West Asia region.
The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) in India reiterated the significance of dialogue and diplomacy in ending the conflict, noting that the turmoil in West Asia has inflicted suffering on its people and disrupted the global energy supply.
The MEA stated, "We commend the ceasefire reached and hope that it will facilitate lasting peace in West Asia. As we have continuously advocated, de-escalation, dialogue, and diplomacy are essential to bring a swift conclusion to the ongoing conflict."
