Brussels, Feb 28 (NationPress) The European Union raised significant alarms regarding the recent events in Iran, reiterating its unwavering dedication to maintaining regional security and stability. The EU confirmed that it is actively engaging with partners throughout the region.
“It is essential to ensure nuclear safety and to avert any actions that may escalate tensions or jeopardize the global non-proliferation framework. The European Union has implemented extensive sanctions against the actions of Iran’s oppressive regime and the Revolutionary Guards, while consistently advocating for diplomatic solutions to address the nuclear and ballistic programs through negotiation,” stated European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen via X.
“Together with EU Member States, we will undertake every necessary measure to ensure that EU citizens in the area have our complete backing,” she added.
The EU urged all involved parties to exercise the utmost restraint, to safeguard civilians, and to adhere to international law.
In the meantime, the European Union High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy, Kaja Kallas, characterized the recent developments in the Middle East as “dangerous.” She held the Iranian regime accountable for the deaths of thousands, asserting that Iran’s nuclear and ballistic missile initiatives, alongside its support for terrorist entities, present a significant threat to global security.
“The EU has enacted stringent sanctions against Iran and endorsed diplomatic efforts concerning the nuclear situation. I have engaged with Israel’s Foreign Minister Saar and other regional ministers. The EU is also working closely with Arab partners to investigate diplomatic avenues. The protection of civilians and adherence to international humanitarian law remain our priorities,” she stated on X.
“Our consular network is fully operational to assist EU citizens in departing from the region. Non-essential EU personnel are being withdrawn, while our Aspides naval mission remains on high alert in the Red Sea, prepared to maintain the maritime corridor's security,” she emphasized.
The United States and Israel executed coordinated strikes against Iran on Saturday, sharply escalating tensions in the Middle East. This incident raises alarms about a potential escalation that could have extensive geopolitical and economic ramifications. In retaliation, Iran reportedly launched ballistic missiles targeting Israel, as confirmed by the Israeli military.
