Is Iran Taking a Hard Line After US Envoy's Controversial Remarks?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Cairo, Feb 22 (NationPress) Iran has pledged to maintain its national unity and has classified the naval and air forces of European Union (EU) nations as terrorist organizations. This declaration follows a US envoy's inflammatory comments, which have sparked widespread outrage throughout Arab nations.
During a conference in Tehran, Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian reiterated his government's dedication to national resilience and unity, stating that Iran will not succumb to external pressures while it continues nuclear negotiations with the United States, as reported by the Xinhua news agency.
"We will strive and will not submit to the challenges we are facing," he emphasized in statements broadcast live by state-run IRIB TV.
While recognizing the challenges, Pezeshkian urged for national solidarity, calling on Iranians to "set aside their differences" and stand united.
His remarks come in the wake of a recent increase in US military presence in the Middle East and two rounds of indirect nuclear discussions between Washington and Tehran, focusing on Iran's nuclear ambitions and the potential easing of US sanctions.
Additionally, the Iranian Foreign Ministry announced its designation of the naval and air forces of all EU member states as terrorist entities.
This decision is a reaction to the EU's recent "unlawful and unjustified" classification of Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps as a terrorist organization, according to a ministry statement.
The EU's action is seen as "contradictory to the fundamental principles and regulations of the United Nations Charter and international law," the statement read.
In light of escalating regional tensions, US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee claimed in a Friday interview that Israel possesses a "biblical right" to assert control over most of the Middle East.
His remarks have been met with condemnation across Arab nations, with the Arab League labeling them as "extremely extremist."
Huckabee's comments, deemed illogical and irrational, are "inconsistent with the essential principles and established diplomatic norms," remarked Secretary-General of the Arab League Ahmed Aboul-Gheit in a statement.
These statements "only serve to inflame sentiments and provoke religious and national emotions" at a time when nations are seeking ways to implement a ceasefire in Gaza and "capitalize on the opportunity to initiate a serious political process toward peace," he added.
The Egyptian Foreign Ministry expressed its "astonishment" over Huckabee's remarks on Saturday, calling them a "blatant violation" of international law and the United Nations Charter.
Also characterizing the rhetoric as "extremist," Saudi Foreign Minister Faisal bin Farhan Al Saud stated the same day that Huckabee's actions "forebode severe consequences and jeopardize international peace and security by antagonizing regional countries and peoples, undermining the foundations of the global order."
