Key Takeaways
Washington, D.C., Feb 23 (NationPress) – In a tragic incident early Sunday, a man was fatally shot by agents of the US Secret Service along with local law enforcement after attempting to breach the secure perimeter of Mar-a-Lago, the Florida estate owned by former President Donald Trump.
According to a statement from the Secret Service, at approximately 1:30 a.m. on February 22, a male in his early 20s was engaged by law enforcement after entering the restricted area of Mar-a-Lago. During this confrontation, shots were fired.
The deceased, whose name has not been disclosed pending family notification, was found near the north gate of the estate, reportedly armed with what appeared to be a shotgun and a fuel canister.
At the time of the incident, Trump was in Washington, D.C., and there were no Secret Service protectees present at Mar-a-Lago, as reported by Xinhua news agency.
Law enforcement personnel, including the Secret Service and a deputy from the Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office (PBSO), responded to the situation, during which the shooting occurred. Fortunately, no officers were harmed.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation, along with the Secret Service and PBSO, is currently investigating the incident, focusing on the individual’s background, actions, possible motives, and the circumstances surrounding the use of force.
This incident follows a previous attempt on Trump's life by Ryan Wesley Routh, who, in September 2024, had tried to assassinate Trump at Trump International Golf Club, located just a short distance from Mar-a-Lago.
Earlier this month, Routh was sentenced to life in prison after being convicted of that assassination attempt.
