FBI Mobilizes Resources for Investigation of Shooting at Trump's Mar-a-Lago
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Washington, Feb 23 (NationPress) A 21-year-old man from North Carolina was shot dead by agents of the US Secret Service after he unlawfully breached the security perimeter of President Donald Trump's Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida, as reported by various media outlets.
The Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has announced that it is “allocating all necessary resources” to investigate this incident.
The individual has been identified as Austin Tucker Martin, hailing from Cameron, North Carolina.
As per Fox News, the shooting occurred around 1:30 a.m. when Martin made an unauthorized entry through the north gate of the resort while another vehicle was departing.
Palm Beach County Sheriff Ric Bradshaw informed the media that the suspect was armed with a shotgun and a gas canister.
“They confronted a white male carrying a gas can and a shotgun. He was instructed to drop these items, but he put down the gas can and raised the shotgun,” said Bradshaw.
“At that moment, the deputy and two Secret Service agents discharged their firearms, effectively neutralizing the threat.”
The man was declared dead on the scene, and fortunately, no personnel from the Secret Service or Palm Beach County Sheriff's Office were harmed.
The Washington Post reported that the shooting took place just within the inner perimeter near the estate's north gate, and at the time of the incident, Trump was not present at Mar-a-Lago.
The FBI is spearheading the investigation with support from local law enforcement. Brett Skiles, the special agent in charge of the FBI's Miami field office, stated that the bureau is currently examining the scene and gathering evidence. Authorities have encouraged nearby residents to check their exterior security camera footage for any suspicious activity.
The New York Post revealed that a box for the shotgun was subsequently found in Martin's vehicle. Additionally, it was reported that Martin had been reported missing by his family just one day prior.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt commented on X, stating that the Secret Service “reacted swiftly and decisively to neutralize an individual who posed a threat, armed with a gun and a gas canister, invading President Trump’s residence.”
FBI Director Kash Patel affirmed that the bureau is “committing all essential resources” to this inquiry.
This incident occurs amid rising security concerns regarding Trump, as he has previously survived two assassination attempts during his 2024 presidential campaign. In one instance, a shooter fired at him during a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, narrowly missing him.
