Washington, Sep 23 (NationPress) Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal engaged in discussions with US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer in New York, aiming to negotiate the initial phase of a trade agreement between the two nations, as reported by sources.
According to insights shared with IANS, the meeting prioritized resolving critical challenges, with both parties optimistic about achieving an interim agreement shortly.
Official statements from both India and the US regarding this meeting are still awaited.
This dialogue follows US Assistant Trade Representative for South and Central Asia Brendan Lynch's recent trade negotiations with India’s chief trade negotiator Rajesh Agrawal in Delhi.
The Indian summary of the discussions indicated that “constructive conversations took place on multiple facets of the trade deal, leading to a decision to enhance efforts in this direction.”
However, the discussions have been influenced by the Trump administration’s significant changes to the H-1B visa program.
On Friday, US President Donald Trump enacted a proclamation imposing a $100,000 fee for each new application.
This announcement sparked considerable confusion over the weekend, as it appeared to affect current H-1B visa holders who might encounter obstacles in returning to the US.
The White House clarified to IANS on Saturday that this fee is a “one-time charge” applicable solely to new applications, excluding renewals or existing visa holders.
“This is a one-time fee that pertains only to the petition. It ONLY applies to new visas, not renewals or current visa holders. It will first take effect in the next upcoming lottery cycle,” a White House spokesperson informed IANS.
The Ministry of External Affairs also released a statement, indicating that this measure may have “humanitarian implications.”
Trade discussions between the two countries resumed after US President Donald Trump called Prime Minister Narendra Modi to extend birthday wishes on September 16.
In a post on X, PM Modi referred to Trump as his “friend” and expressed gratitude for the wishes.
“Thank you, my friend, President Trump, for your call and warm birthday greetings. Like you, I am wholly dedicated to elevating the India-US Comprehensive and Global Partnership to new heights. We back your initiatives aimed at a peaceful resolution of the Ukraine conflict,” PM Modi stated.
President Trump also shared on Truth Social, describing the phone call as “wonderful” and thanking Modi for his support in resolving the Ukraine situation.
“Just had a wonderful phone call with my friend, Prime Minister Narendra Modi. I wished him a very Happy Birthday! He is doing an incredible job. Narendra: Thank you for your support in ending the War between Russia and Ukraine! President DJT,” he commented.
