Dhaka, Oct 2 (NationPress) Sajeeb Wazed, the son of former Bangladeshi Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, has claimed that the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus has intensified extremism, leading to a resurgence of religious persecution nationwide.
He expressed that Hindu minorities are commemorating this year's Durga Puja amid a climate of fear and uncertainty.
"Durga Puja symbolizes devotion and celebration, representing the victory of good over evil. Yet this year, our Hindu brothers and sisters in Bangladesh are participating in the puja under shadows of fear and uncertainty. Under the Yunus administration, the rise of extremism has rekindled the grim reality of religious persecution," stated Wazed, who previously served as the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Advisor to the Prime Minister.
The former advisor highlighted that temples have been targeted, families faced intimidation, and the fundamental right to worship freely has again come under threat in the country.
He noted that the same extremists who once opposed the Liberation of Bangladesh are now gaining confidence, instilling fear among those who uphold the values of the 1971 Liberation War.
Wazed emphasized that the Awami League has historically acted as the guardian of Bangladesh's minorities, rebuilding temples that were destroyed in 1971, defending the rights of Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians to practice their beliefs, and implementing stricter measures to prevent communal violence.
"Secularism and equality have always been central to our political ideology, as Bangladesh was founded on the principles of unity rather than division. Today, as our Hindu brothers and sisters illuminate lamps and pray to Maa Durga, we cannot overlook the veil of fear that envelops them. However, we believe this darkness will not endure," Wazed affirmed.
Assuring that the Awami League will regain power in Bangladesh, Wazed promised that "every Hindu, every minority, will be able to practice their faith without fear, and live in this nation with complete dignity and freedom."
