Hyundai Motor Workers to Conduct Partial Strike in Response to Yoon's Actions

Seoul, Dec 5 (NationPress) Workers represented by the union at Hyundai Motor are set to engage in a partial strike this week, showing support for a larger labor union's walkout against President Yoon Suk Yeol's temporary declaration of martial law, as stated by the company's union on Thursday.
Hyundai's union, comprising 43,000 members, will participate in a four-hour strike on both Thursday and Friday, as per the directives of the Korean Metal Workers' Union (KMWU), a union spokesperson confirmed via phone.
The KMWU is affiliated with the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), known for its militant stance. Additionally, the union representing GM Korea Co., which has 7,300 members, has also decided to partake in a similar four-hour walkout on Thursday and Friday, according to reports from Yonhap news agency.
In the meantime, Bank of Korea (BOK) Governor Rhee Chang-yong stated on Thursday that the ongoing political situation regarding the opposition's efforts to impeach President Yoon Suk Yeol is not anticipated to impact South Korea's sovereign ratings or growth trajectory, given the nation's robust market fundamentals.
This comment was made during a press briefing held in Seoul, just two days after Yoon's unexpected late-night announcement of martial law, which was revoked approximately six hours later following the National Assembly's vote to reject it. Subsequently, the opposition filed a motion for impeachment against Yoon.
On Wednesday, the KCTU pledged to initiate an indefinite strike until Yoon resigns, taking accountability for the martial law fiasco that has stirred the nation.
Late on Tuesday, Yoon had declared martial law, alleging that “anti-state forces” were crippling the country's operations with impeachment proceedings and a reduced budget bill.
However, Yoon rescinded the martial law proposal—the first of its kind in over four decades—early Wednesday after the National Assembly voted to annul the declaration.
In response, opposition parties introduced a motion for impeachment on Wednesday concerning the failed martial law.
