Imran Khan's Sisters Stage Sit-In Outside Adiala Jail After Access Denied
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Islamabad, March 11 (NationPress) Sisters of former Prime Minister of Pakistan, Imran Khan, staged a sit-in after they were once again prevented from accessing Adiala jail due to a check post blockade. Reports indicate that police also forcibly restrained Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) supporters who attempted to approach the prison on Wednesday.
Speaking to the media outside the jail on Tuesday, Aleema Khan, Imran Khan's sister, expressed her disappointment over the family's inability to visit the PTI leader despite existing court orders. In response to inquiries, she dismissed rumors claiming her brother would be released prior to Eid, as reported by the prominent daily, Dawn.
Aleema stated, "They do not wish to release him. Just observe the international developments, and you will understand why Imran Khan remains incarcerated."
In February, detained PTI leaders had communicated their grave concerns regarding alleged barriers that hindered legal and medical access to Imran Khan. They sent a letter to the Chief Justice of Pakistan, asking for intervention to uphold justice in this matter. The leaders urged Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to take notice and ensure that Imran Khan is permitted to consult with his personal doctor, legal representatives, and family as stipulated by the law, according to local media.
In a letter prepared by their legal team, PTI officials Shah Mehmood Qureshi, Yasmin Rashid, Ijaz Chaudhry, Omar Sarfraz Cheema, and Mahmood-ur-Rashid stated that Imran Khan has been denied access to his personal doctor, family, and legal counsel during his medical treatment, as reported by the leading media outlet, Geo News. This letter was prompted by a recent incident where Imran Khan received a second dose of medication at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad.
The PTI leaders drew parallels between Imran Khan's medical situation and that of former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif's treatment in 2019, noting that the government had ensured proper medical care for Nawaz Sharif when he had low platelet counts. They highlighted that Nawaz’s personal physician was allowed to participate in all medical board meetings, and his family and legal representatives could visit him.
The PTI leaders pointed out that Nawaz Sharif was permitted to travel to the UK for heart treatment, where he had previously received care. They alleged that the current government engaged in "cloak-and-dagger" tactics, initially preventing Imran Khan from accessing medical facilities when he was unwell and later issuing statements after his CRVO diagnosis became public.
The letter emphasized that Imran Khan's treatment rights were being overlooked and that his family, personal attorney, and consultants were barred from meeting him. Furthermore, they stated that the family was only informed about his second injection post-procedure, which occurred around 2 am on Tuesday. They accused the government of deliberately obstructing access to maintain political dominance and implored Chief Justice Yahya Afridi to ensure that Imran Khan is allowed to meet with his personal doctor, legal counsel, and family in accordance with legal provisions, as reported by Geo News.
