The MEA further mentioned that both nations will designate Commercial Representatives in their respective embassies and establish a Joint Chamber of Commerce and Industry to facilitate smoother trade and collaboration.
The announcement of the Kabul-Delhi and Kabul-Amritsar air freight corridors followed discussions between Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal and his Afghan counterpart Alhaj Nooruddin Azizi, who visited India from November 19 to 25. This visit is part of efforts to revive traditional trade routes, especially in agricultural and pharmaceutical sectors, and to restore logistical links disrupted in recent times. The reopening of these air corridors provides a dependable alternative to land routes.
The two ministers deliberated on various topics, including trade facilitation, market access, connectivity, and capacity-building. They expressed mutual support for the reactivation of the Joint Working Group on Trade, Commerce, and Investment and agreed to investigate collaborative opportunities in mining and other high-value industries.
Azizi also engaged with External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, discussing trade, connectivity, and enhancing people-to-people relations.
The MEA stated that this visit underscores the commitment of both parties to intensify economic interaction and foster stronger cooperation in trade and investment. India reiterated its dedication to collaborating with Afghanistan to ensure sustainable benefits for the citizens of both nations.
During the visit, Azizi attended the India International Trade Fair, where Afghan merchants showcased various stalls. He engaged with exhibitors and toured Afghanistan’s cultural pavilion at the fair. His delegation also met with several industry organizations, including the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority, Cotton Textiles Export Promotion Council, Cotton Corporation of India, Apparel Export Promotion Council, and the Manmade and Technical Textiles Export Promotion Council.
The ministerial delegation interacted with the PHD Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India, and the Pharmaceutical Export Promotion Council of India. They discussed strategies for ensuring a long-term supply of agricultural products, medicines, and essential goods to Afghanistan.
