Santiago, Nov 11 (NationPress) In a significant diplomatic engagement, India and Chile convened their 9th Foreign Office Consultations in Santiago, where they pledged to enhance collaboration in critical sectors such as trade, investment, connectivity, health and pharmaceuticals, traditional medicines, science and technology, mining and mineral exploration, defence, civil nuclear technologies, education, space, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges.
During the discussions, India urged Chile to contemplate establishing long-term agreements for the supply of mineral resources. The meeting, held on Monday local time, saw officials from both nations agreeing to broaden their bilateral relations into new and emerging domains of relevance, including Digital Public Infrastructure, innovation, and green energy, as highlighted by a statement from the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA).
Topics such as facilitating visas for Indian professionals and business travelers were also on the agenda, especially the implementation of a multiple-entry visa scheme for business individuals and professionals as declared by President Boric in April 2025, the MEA noted.
The meeting was co-chaired by P Kumaran, Secretary (East) of the Ministry of External Affairs, alongside Ambassador Rodrigo Olsen, Secretary General of Chile's Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The nations reviewed the progress of discussions held between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Gabriel Boric in April 2025, focusing on accelerating the ongoing negotiations for a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement (CEPA) aimed at a swift conclusion.
The MEA acknowledged that these consultations allowed for a comprehensive review of bilateral relations following the recent state visit of Chile's President to India in April.
To further diversify and strengthen their partnership, both countries agreed to hasten finalization of pending agreements, including those related to customs cooperation, recognition of the Indian pharmacopoeia, cooperation in Traditional Medicines and Yoga, a Social Security Agreement, collaboration in the space sector, training and capacity building in security, education, science and technology, as well as cultural and visa matters to enhance people-to-people connections.
Additionally, both nations committed to closely coordinate on multilateral platforms concerning mutual interests. Recently, Chile hosted the LAC Regional Conference of the International Solar Alliance, during which both countries explored avenues for cooperation in renewable energy, technology sharing, and investments. The representatives of both nations agreed to convene the next round of Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi at a mutually agreed date.
