Amman, Dec 15 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi met with King Abdullah II of Jordan at the Al Husseiniya Palace on Monday, proposing that the two nations strive to boost their bilateral trade to US $5 billion.
“India, as Jordan's third-largest trading partner, PM Modi suggested that both nations should work towards achieving $5 billion in trade over the next five years,” a press statement indicated.
Additionally, PM Modi emphasized the need for collaboration between Jordan’s digital payment system and India’s United Payments Interface (UPI).
The statement also highlighted Jordan's role as a key supplier of fertiliser to India, with discussions ongoing between companies from both countries regarding significant investments in Jordan to address the rising demand for phosphatic fertiliser in India.
Earlier, PM Modi received a warm ceremonial welcome from King Abdullah II.
The two leaders engaged in both restricted and delegation-level meetings, fondly recalling their past interactions and underscoring the historic ties shared by their nations.
They acknowledged that this visit is particularly significant as both countries celebrate 75 years of diplomatic relations.
PM Modi commended King Abdullah for his dedication to strengthening India-Jordan relations.
In turn, King Abdullah II expressed strong support for India’s efforts in combating terrorism and condemned all forms of this menace.
The Prime Minister appreciated King Abdullah II's leadership in addressing terrorism, extremism, and radicalisation, contributing to the global fight against these challenges.
Both leaders deliberated on enhancing cooperation in various sectors including trade and investment, defence, renewable energy, fertiliser, agriculture, IT, infrastructure, healthcare, education, tourism, and cultural exchanges.
They also shared insights on regional developments and global issues, reiterating the necessity of restoring peace and stability.
PM Modi reaffirmed India’s commitment to supporting efforts aimed at achieving lasting peace in the region.
During the visit, both parties finalized Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) in culture, renewable energy, water management, digital public infrastructure, and a twinning arrangement between Petra and Ellora.
These agreements are expected to significantly enhance the friendship and bilateral ties between India and Jordan.
A banquet dinner hosted by King Abdullah in honour of PM Modi followed the talks.
The Prime Minister also extended an invitation to King Abdullah to visit India, which the King graciously accepted.
