Hanoi, March 21 (NationPress) A Mekong-Ganga Cooperation (MGC) initiative was officially launched with India's backing in Vietnam on Friday, demonstrating New Delhi's commitment to enhancing sub-regional collaboration and fortifying the India-Vietnam friendship.

The MGC project for a community water supply and distribution system in Xin Cai commune, Meo Vac district, Ha Giang province was inaugurated on 21/3/25. The Embassy of India in Hanoi shared on X, "Pleased to see that the India-Vietnam partnership is benefiting local communities in collaboration with provinces."

Initiated in 2000, the Mekong Ganga Cooperation is a collaborative effort by six nations – India and five ASEAN members: Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar, Thailand, and Vietnam. This cooperation focuses on tourism, culture, education, as well as transportation and communication, making it one of the longest-standing sub-regional cooperation frameworks.

The initiative aims to strengthen ties among the people living along the Ganga and Mekong rivers, both significant civilizational waterways. It serves as a vital mechanism within the lower Mekong region and aligns with India's 'Act East' policy.

New Delhi has financed numerous MGC Quick Impact Projects (QIPs) in Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, along with various community development initiatives under the Rakhine State Development Programme (RSDP) and the Border Area Development Programme in Myanmar.

The relationship between India and Vietnam was elevated to a 'Comprehensive Strategic Partnership' during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Hanoi in 2016.

Over the years, India has maintained a strong development cooperation with Vietnam, significantly contributing to training, capacity building, socio-economic advancement, and industrial development. Annually, numerous Vietnamese nationals benefit from sponsored training and educational programs in India, with collaborations extending into fields such as information technology and heritage conservation.

Through the MGC framework, India has been implementing QIPs across various provinces of Vietnam to enhance community facilities at the grassroots level.
