India's outgoing High Commissioner to Bangladesh, Pranay Verma, has reaffirmed India's commitment to deepening multifaceted engagement with Bangladesh for the mutual benefit and shared prosperity of both nations, the High Commission of India in Bangladesh confirmed on Sunday, 25 May. The statement came as Verma concluded his tenure in Dhaka ahead of his departure on 27 May.

Farewell Call on Bangladesh PM

On 24 May, High Commissioner Pranay Verma paid a farewell call on Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman. During the meeting, Rahman thanked Verma for his contributions to bilateral relations and conveyed best wishes for his next assignment. Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman was also present at the meeting.

Both sides briefly discussed various potential areas of cooperation aligned with the development priorities of the two countries, signalling that momentum on bilateral engagement is expected to continue under incoming leadership.

Verma's Next Assignment and Successor

The Ministry of External Affairs announced in April that Verma has been appointed as the next Ambassador of India to the Kingdom of Belgium and the European Union. He is scheduled to leave Dhaka on 27 May.

Former Union Minister Dinesh Trivedi has been appointed as India's next High Commissioner to Bangladesh. Trivedi, who served in the Lok Sabha from 2009 to 2019 representing the Barrackpore constituency, also held multiple terms as a Rajya Sabha member, bringing considerable legislative experience to the diplomatic role.

Earlier High-Level Diplomatic Contact

Earlier this year, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar met with Bangladesh Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman in New Delhi, with Adviser on Foreign Affairs Humayun Kabir also in attendance. During that meeting, Jaishankar reiterated India's desire to engage constructively with the new Bangladesh government and further strengthen bilateral ties.

The two sides agreed to explore proposals for deepening the partnership through relevant bilateral mechanisms, with follow-on official meetings expected at an early date. Both sides also exchanged views on regional and global issues of mutual interest.

Broader Diplomatic Outreach

During the New Delhi visit, Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman also met National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Union Minister of Petroleum and Natural Gas Hardeep Singh Puri, underscoring the breadth of engagement across security and energy sectors.

With Trivedi's appointment pending formalisation, the transition marks a significant moment in India-Bangladesh diplomatic ties as both nations navigate a period of political change in Dhaka.
