New Delhi, March 29 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday conveyed his profound grief regarding the devastating earthquake in Myanmar, which has tragically claimed over 1,000 lives.
In a message on X, PM Modi stated, "Had a conversation with Senior General H.E. Min Aung Hlaing of Myanmar. Extended our heartfelt condolences for the lives lost in the catastrophic earthquake."
As part of its Act East policy, India has initiated 'Operation Brahma' to deliver immediate relief to Myanmar. On Saturday, over 15 tonnes of vital aid were sent following a series of intense tremors that caused widespread destruction on Friday.
Emphasizing India's steadfast dedication to supporting its neighbors during crises, PM Modi remarked, "As a close ally and neighbor, India stands united with the people of Myanmar during this challenging time. Essential disaster relief supplies, humanitarian aid, and search and rescue teams are being swiftly dispatched to the impacted regions as part of Operation Brahma."
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar announced the launch of Operation Brahma, confirming that the first shipment of humanitarian assistance had arrived at Yangon Airport on Saturday morning.
"Operation Brahma is officially underway. The first shipment of humanitarian aid from India has landed at Yangon Airport in Myanmar," the EAM posted on X.
The Ministry of External Affairs highlighted India's position as a primary responder, noting that the relief package included tents, blankets, sleeping bags, food packets, hygiene kits, generators, and essential medicines.
The Indian Air Force (IAF) transported the relief supplies using a C-130J aircraft from Air Force Station Hindon. The shipment contains ready-to-eat meals, water purifiers, solar lamps, generator sets, and critical medical supplies such as paracetamol, antibiotics, syringes, gloves, and bandages.
Meanwhile, the Indian Embassy in Bangkok is actively monitoring the situation in neighboring Thailand, where tremors were also reported. Officials confirmed that there have been no indications of any Indian citizens being affected.
The Embassy advised Indian nationals in Thailand to reach out to emergency services if necessary, assuring that all Embassy personnel in Bangkok and the Consulate in Chiang Mai are safe.
