New Delhi, April 27 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi commended India's global humanitarian initiatives on Sunday, underscoring the nation's rapid response to emergencies in Myanmar, Ethiopia, and Afghanistan. He stated that New Delhi's role as the Vishwa Mitra during crises and its dedication to humanity is evolving into the "hallmark of India's identity."
During the 121st episode of his monthly radio broadcast 'Mann Ki Baat,' PM Modi reminisced about India's 'Operation Brahma', which was activated to assist Myanmar after a devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake.
"You must have seen the devastating images from the earthquake that hit Myanmar last month. The earthquake wreaked havoc there. Every moment was crucial for those trapped under the rubble. That's why India immediately initiated Operation Brahma for our brothers and sisters in Myanmar," he remarked.
He elaborated on the operation, stating, "From Air Force aircraft to Navy ships, everything was dispatched to assist Myanmar. An Indian team established a field hospital, and engineers evaluated the damage to critical infrastructure. The team provided blankets, tents, sleeping bags, medical supplies, food, and more. Throughout this effort, the Indian team received immense gratitude from the local populace."
PM Modi shared a particularly poignant story, referring to it as a "heart-touching example" of "courage, patience, and ingenuity" when Indian rescuers saved a 70-year-old woman who had been trapped under debris for over 18 hours.
"The team from India ensured every medical need was met, from stabilizing her oxygen levels to treating fractures. Upon her discharge, she expressed her heartfelt thanks to our team, saying she felt she had been given a new life because of the Indian rescue team. Many individuals told our team that they were able to locate their loved ones due to their efforts," he said.
The Prime Minister also highlighted relief operations at a monastery in Mandalay, Myanmar, where numerous individuals were feared to be trapped post-earthquake. He mentioned that Indian rescue teams conducted operations there as well, receiving warm blessings from Buddhist monks.
Commending the spirit of these endeavors, he stated, "We take pride in all those who participated in Operation Brahma. We uphold our traditions, our values, and the principle of 'Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam' -- the world is one family. India's readiness as the Vishwa Mitra in times of crisis and our commitment to humanity is becoming the hallmark of our identity."
PM Modi also shed light on humanitarian actions taken by Indians abroad, referencing an inspiring initiative from Ethiopia.
"I have learned about an innovative effort from NRIs in Ethiopia. Indians residing there have taken the lead in facilitating medical treatment for children suffering from congenital heart diseases, bringing them to India. Many of these children are also receiving financial assistance from Indian families," he remarked.
"If a child's family cannot afford to travel to India, our Indian community is arranging support for that as well. The goal is to ensure that every child in Ethiopia facing serious health challenges receives appropriate care. This noble endeavor by NRIs is highly appreciated in Ethiopia. It's worth noting that medical facilities are continually improving in India, benefiting citizens from other nations as well," he added.
The Prime Minister noted that India recently dispatched a significant shipment of vaccines to Afghanistan, aimed at preventing diseases like Rabies, Tetanus, Hepatitis B, and Influenza.
"This week, at the request of Nepal, India has sent a substantial consignment of medicines and vaccines. This will ensure improved treatment for patients with thalassemia and sickle cell disease. Whenever it comes to service to humanity, India has always been at the forefront and will continue to lead in future humanitarian needs as well," he stated.
Emphasizing disaster preparedness, PM Modi said, "We were just discussing Disaster Management, and the most crucial aspect of addressing any natural disaster is your readiness. Now, you can enhance this readiness with a special app on your mobile phone. This app can help you avoid getting trapped during any natural disaster and is called 'Sachet'."
Developed by India's National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA), the 'Sachet APP' keeps users informed and safe during emergencies like floods, cyclones, landslides, tsunamis, forest fires, avalanches, storms, hurricanes, or lightning strikes.
"Through this app, you can receive updates from the weather department. Notably, the 'Sachet APP' also provides a wealth of information in regional languages. Be sure to take advantage of this app and share your experiences with us," PM Modi concluded.
