India's Ambassador to Thailand Puneet Agrawal on Monday, 10 August met Thailand's Minister of Digital Economy and Society Chaichanok Chidchob in Bangkok, with discussions centred on strengthening bilateral digital cooperation, sharing strategies to combat online scams, and integrating digital ecosystems to ease travel for tourists. The meeting signals a deepening of the India-Thailand Strategic Partnership across the technology and connectivity fronts.

What Was Discussed

According to the Indian Embassy in Thailand, the two sides exchanged views on enhancing collaboration under the existing bilateral agreement on digital technologies. Key agenda items included experience-sharing on tackling online scams — a growing concern across Southeast Asia — and building interoperable digital infrastructure to facilitate smoother travel experiences for tourists moving between both countries.

Broader Diplomatic Momentum

The digital meeting is part of a broader diplomatic push that has gathered pace in recent months. Last month, Ambassador Agrawal met Thailand's Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Transport Phipat Ratchakitprakarn to explore ways to bolster the strategic partnership through enhanced maritime, air, and road connectivity, alongside deeper people-to-people ties and tourism linkages.

On 16 July, Agrawal also met Urasa Mongkolnavin, Director-General of the Department of South Asian, Middle East and African Affairs at Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, where both sides discussed high-level visits, trade and investment, public health, traditional medicine, and people-to-people connect.

Trade and Investment Ties

Separately, Ambassador Agrawal held a meeting with Thailand Trade Representative Chutintorn Gongsakdi at the Government House. Discussions focused on strengthening trade and investment ties by identifying areas of complementarity, resolving tariff and non-tariff barriers, and working toward a balanced trade framework for mutual benefit, according to the Indian Embassy's post on X.

Strategic Partnership Background

India and Thailand elevated their bilateral relationship to a Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit to Bangkok in April last year. The series of high-level engagements since then reflects both nations' intent to operationalise that upgraded relationship across digital, trade, transport, and people-to-people domains. This comes amid a wider regional push to clamp down on cyber fraud networks, many of which have reportedly targeted Indian nationals through scam call centres operating across Southeast Asia.

With digital cooperation frameworks now under active review, the next steps are expected to focus on formal agreements on cybercrime data-sharing and pilot programmes for tourist digital integration.
