New Delhi, Jan 4 (NationPress) India expressed its concern over the recent occurrences in Venezuela and advocated for all involved parties to resolve issues through peaceful dialogue, thereby promoting the region's peace and stability.
In its announcement, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) revealed that the Indian Embassy in Caracas is actively engaging with members of the Indian community and extending all necessary support.
"The recent occurrences in Venezuela are alarming. We are attentively observing the situation as it evolves. India stands committed to the welfare and safety of the Venezuelan populace. We urge all parties to resolve their differences through dialogue to maintain peace and stability in the region," the statement noted.
Furthermore, the Embassy of India in Caracas is in communication with the Indian community and will keep providing all necessary assistance.
The MEA's statement follows the attack by US Delta forces on a military base in Venezuela on Saturday, concluding months of military mobilization, which resulted in the capture of President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores.
US officials indicate that the couple was taken aboard a warship and transported to New York, where they face charges related to “narco-terrorism” in federal court.
The indictment, disclosed by US Attorney General Pam Bondi, was lodged in the US District Court for the Southern District of New York. Prosecutors allege that Maduro has utilized state power for over two decades to facilitate substantial cocaine shipments to the United States. He faces multiple charges, including narco-terrorism conspiracy, cocaine importation conspiracy, firearms offenses, and associated crimes, with actions dating back to around 1999 and extending to 2025.
The court documents assert that Maduro "oversees a corrupt, illegitimate government" relying on military, intelligence, and law enforcement bodies to safeguard drug trafficking routes. It is alleged that thousands of tons of cocaine were funneled through the Caribbean, Central America, and Mexico.
The indictment also lists co-defendants, including Cilia Flores, Maduro’s son Nicolas Ernesto Maduro Guerra, and several senior officials.
Venezuelan leader Nicolas Maduro is now incarcerated in a notorious federal prison in New York following his capture by US forces at a military base in his home country, where he had been ridiculing President Donald Trump.
As he was led into the local office of the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) on Saturday night before being imprisoned, he mockingly addressed the camera, saying, "Good night. Happy New Year".
Once the undisputed leader of the oil-abundant South American nation, he was seen in a released video by the White House, dressed in a brown uniform, with handcuffs and holding a water bottle as two DEA officers supported him by the elbows.
In another development, Venezuela's Supreme Court on Sunday appointed Vice President Delcy Rodriguez as the Interim President. The Constitutional Chamber’s ruling, following the attack, indicated that Rodriguez would assume the presidency to ensure the nation's administrative continuity and safety.
"The office of President of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, aims to ensure administrative continuity and the comprehensive defense of the Nation," stated the Supreme Court.
The court further mentioned it would evaluate establishing a legal framework to maintain state continuity, government functionality, and sovereignty protection in light of the President’s "forced absence".
