New Delhi, Jan 9 (NationPress) Amid rising apprehensions regarding the political turmoil in Venezuela, India announced on Friday that it is vigilantly observing the unfolding events in the region and is prepared to provide necessary aid to the Indian community residing in this South American nation and its neighboring country, Colombia.
“We are attentively tracking the developments in Venezuela. The Indian community there is relatively small, comprising around 50 individuals, and our Embassy is maintaining communication with them via a travel advisory. In Colombia, where approximately 650 Indian nationals reside, our Embassy is also in close touch. Regarding our commitment to the Indian nationals, we will extend all required support whenever necessary,” stated Randhir Jaiswal, spokesperson for the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), during a weekly media briefing in New Delhi.
The crisis in Venezuela intensified after a controversial US military operation on January 3 that led to the apprehension of Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro and his spouse, Cilia Flores, by US special forces in Caracas, followed by their transfer to the United States to face criminal charges.
The operation, termed as Operation Absolute Resolve, involved explosions and strikes in the capital city of Caracas, and was executed by elite units of the US military.
Maduro and Flores were transported to New York, where they appeared in a federal court in Manhattan and pleaded not guilty to various charges, including narco-terrorism and drug trafficking. They were ordered to remain in custody until their next hearing on March 17.
Earlier this week, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar expressed India’s concerns about the recent events in Venezuela following the US capture of President Maduro.
The EAM called upon all involved parties to prioritize the safety and well-being of the Venezuelan populace amidst the ongoing crisis.
"We are worried about the developments, but we strongly urge all parties involved to engage in dialogue and reach a resolution that prioritizes the well-being and safety of the people of Venezuela," EAM Jaishankar stated at an event in Luxembourg.
On January 4, India characterized the recent developments in Venezuela as "a matter of concern" and urged all stakeholders to address issues peacefully through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability in the region.
In an official statement, the MEA indicated that the Indian Embassy in Caracas is in contact with members of the Indian community and is committed to providing all possible assistance.
"Recent developments in Venezuela are of significant concern. We are diligently monitoring the changing situation. India reaffirms its support for the well-being and safety of the Venezuelan populace. We call upon all stakeholders to resolve issues amicably through dialogue, ensuring peace and stability in the region," it further stated.
"The Indian Embassy in Caracas is in contact with members of the Indian community and will continue to provide all necessary assistance," it concluded.
