New Delhi, Aug 16 (NationPress) The recent dialogue between US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin has positioned India in a more favorable diplomatic stance, presenting opportunities for both economic and strategic advancements, as per foreign affairs analyst Robinder Sachdeva.
In an interview with IANS, Sachdeva remarked that while the outcome was primarily a victory for Putin, it also holds advantages for India, potentially preventing further sanctions and even leading to reductions in tariffs.
He noted that the Trump-Putin discussions, despite not being a resounding success for Trump, represented a strategic gain for Putin and opened doors for India in international diplomacy.
“For Putin, it was indeed a triumph. His strategy of emphasizing a peace agreement over an immediate ceasefire in Ukraine was upheld,” Sachdeva explained.
“While Ukraine, the US, and Europe were advocating for a ceasefire, the results of the meeting reflected Putin’s conditions,” he added.
Sachdeva detailed that the talks focused on revitalizing Russia-US ties prior to addressing the conflict in Ukraine. “Topics like minerals and oil exploration, space, defense, nuclear collaboration, and Arctic initiatives were discussed,” he stated.
For India, the implications were significant. “Had the meeting turned out poorly, Trump could have enacted severe sanctions against Russia, indirectly impacting India. Now, there is a possibility that additional tariffs on Indian products may be lifted,” he pointed out. He stressed that ongoing strife between Russia and Ukraine could push Moscow closer to Beijing, which is something India aims to prevent to sustain healthy relations with Russia.
Moreover, Sachdeva noted Trump’s ulterior motive: to diminish the Russia-China partnership.
“If Russia is encouraged to avoid full alignment with Xi Jinping, the US could provide incentives. It’s a mutually beneficial exchange,” he remarked.
With Prime Minister Narendra Modi's upcoming visit to China, Sachdeva believes this development bolsters India’s negotiating power.
“If China perceives that India maintains robust relationships with both the US and Russia, it will engage in negotiations with greater respect. This situation empowers PM Modi ahead of discussions with Xi,” he concluded.
