Kuala Lumpur, Oct 27 (NationPress) Emphasizing India's ambition to organize the 7th East Asia Summit (EAS) Conference on Maritime Security Cooperation, External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar articulated India's dedication to enhancing maritime collaboration.
During his national address at the East Asia Summit held in Kuala Lumpur on Monday, EAM Jaishankar stated, "India fully endorses the initiatives of the EAS and its future pathways. We recently convened the EAS knowledge exchange workshop focusing on energy efficiency policies and hosted a conclave for higher educational institutions.
"Our resolve to advance maritime collaboration is unwavering, in alignment with the ASEAN Outlook on the Indo-Pacific and our mutual commitment to the 1982 UNCLOS. The year 2026 is set to be commemorated as the ASEAN-India year devoted to maritime cooperation. Notably, an increasing number of nations have joined the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative," he mentioned.
He suggested organizing an EAS Maritime Heritage Festival in Lothal, Gujarat, and reiterated India's plans to host the 7th EAS Conference on Maritime Security Cooperation.
EAM Jaishankar also voiced India's concerns regarding cyber scam operations in the region that have victimized thousands, including Indian citizens.
"Regarding Myanmar, we acted as a ‘First Responder’ during the March earthquake. Our project on the India-Myanmar-Thailand Trilateral Highway, in which we all have vested interests, continues to advance. We share apprehensions about cyber scam centers in the region that have ensnared our nationals," he said.
Delivering Prime Minister Narendra Modi's cordial wishes to the EAS on its 20th anniversary, he emphasized that India appreciates the contributions of EAS members toward peace, progress, and prosperity.
As the Chair of ASEAN, Malaysia also presides over the EAS. The Summit gathered Heads of State/Government and High Representatives from EAS participating nations. The Presidents of BRICS and G20 were also present at the Open Session, sharing insights on their cooperation with the EAS to foster economic resilience and promote sustainable growth, as per the official statement.
