Seoul, Dec 31 (NationPress) Authorities have initiated an inquiry into Rep. Kang Sun-woo of the ruling Democratic Party (DP) following allegations that he accepted 100 million won (approximately US$69,400) from a councilor in Seoul, officials confirmed on Wednesday.
The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency has designated its public crime investigation team to manage the case after opposition lawmakers lodged a formal complaint against Kang and the council member regarding bribery, as reported by Yonhap news agency.
Kang is accused of receiving the funds through an aide during the 2022 regional elections.
The situation garnered attention after it was revealed that Kang had discussions with Rep. Kim Byung-kee of the same party, who is currently facing misconduct allegations.
New allegations surfaced indicating that Kang and Rep. Kim, who was then the secretary of the nomination management committee, discussed a local aide who received and retained 100 million Korean won from Council member Kim prior to the eighth nationwide simultaneous local elections held in April 2022.
The day following their conversation, the Democratic Party of Korea’s Seoul City Party declared that Council member Kim would be the exclusive nominee for the Seoul City Council seat in Gangseo District, Seoul.
This sparked controversy as it was suggested that despite being aware of the monetary exchange, actions to exclude him from the nomination were not pursued.
In a separate development, police are set to interrogate an activist later today who alleged that Rep. Kim met with Park Dae-jun, the former CEO of Coupang Corp., in September to sway personnel decisions regarding his ex-aide who was employed by the company.
Amid escalating allegations of misconduct, which include claims of preferential treatment and abuse of power, the lawmaker resigned from the ruling party's floor leadership on Tuesday.
