Tehran, March 8 (NationPress) Iran has voiced serious concerns regarding the rising violence and insecurity in Syria. The Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesman, Esmaeil Baghaei, stated that Iran is actively monitoring the internal situation in Syria and is alarmed by the reports of violence and insecurity emerging from various regions of the Arab nation.

His comments come in light of intense clashes that have erupted in Syria's coastal areas over the last 48 hours.

Baghaei emphasized the importance of securing stability in Syria and fostering an environment conducive to the peaceful coexistence of all Syrian factions. He also highlighted the necessity of preserving Syria's territorial integrity amid threats and aggressions from Israel.

According to Xinhua news agency, Baghaei declared Iran's firm opposition to any form of insecurity and violence in Syria, condemning the killing and wounding of the oppressed Syrian populace, regardless of their group or tribe.

Since Thursday, violent confrontations between forces of Syria's interim government and armed opposition factions linked to the former regime in coastal areas have resulted in nearly 250 fatalities.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported that these clashes represent one of the most deadly escalations since the previous government fell last December.

It was noted that among the deceased were military personnel, opposition combatants, and civilians, as government forces intensified their operations against remnants of the former regime's military units in Latakia, Tartous, and Hama.

The clashes began after gunmen targeted military units, checkpoints, and headquarters along the coastline, according to the Observatory.

The casualty figures include 50 soldiers and officers from Syria's Defence and Interior Ministries, alongside 45 opposition combatants.

The Observatory also indicated that additional reinforcements and heavy weaponry have been sent to critical conflict zones, as fighting persists in rural Latakia and Tartous.
