Jerusalem, Aug 14 (NationPress) Israel's far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich has declared the approval for the development of 3,401 housing units designated for settlers in a highly contentious region of the occupied West Bank.
The proposed homes will be constructed in the E1 area, situated east of Jerusalem, between the city and the settlement of Ma'ale Adumim. This location is particularly controversial as its development would effectively sever the connection between East Jerusalem and the northern West Bank. Plans for construction in E1 have been stalled for years due to significant international pushback.
Smotrich, who leads a pro-settler faction within Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's ruling coalition, indicated that this action is also intended to obstruct the formation of a Palestinian state, as reported by Xinhua News Agency.
"The endorsement of construction plans in E1 effectively dismisses the notion of a Palestinian state and advances our ongoing initiatives toward de facto sovereignty initiated by our government," he remarked in his statement.
Peace Now, an Israeli organization monitoring settlements, announced that the Israeli Housing Ministry had approved six new tenders for a total of 4,030 housing units in the West Bank on Wednesday. The organization criticized Netanyahu's administration for intensifying the annexation of the West Bank and undermining the prospect of a two-state solution.
In related news, Israeli military chief Eyal Zamir inspected army outposts in southern Lebanon on Wednesday, stating that the military has adopted a "new strategic concept" to counter emerging threats.
Footage released by the military depicted Zamir using binoculars, conferring with commanders, and evaluating frontline positions.
"We are proactively addressing threats, identifying and neutralizing them across all fronts," he stated.
Zamir also shared that he had sanctioned plans to "conquer Gaza" earlier in the day, while the military maintained operations in Syria, Yemen, and the occupied West Bank, closely observing developments in Iran.
"We are engaged in a multi-front conflict, adjusting our strategies to respond to various threats. We are active on all fronts, initiating attacks independently," he added.
Despite a ceasefire between Israel and Hezbollah brokered in November 2024 following 14 months of conflict, Israeli airstrikes have continued.
Zamir reported that the military has eliminated over 240 militants and conducted approximately 600 strikes since the ceasefire was established.
