New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar convened a meeting with his Libyan counterpart Eltaher S.M. Elbaour on Friday, focusing on strengthening cooperation in trade, business, infrastructure, and energy sectors.
During their discussion, Elbaour provided Jaishankar with insights regarding the current situation in Libya.
"It was a pleasure to meet FM Eltaher S M Elbaour of Libya this afternoon. We engaged in fruitful talks aimed at enhancing our collaboration in the fields of trade, business, infrastructure, and energy. I appreciate his update on the situation in Libya. I reiterated India’s commitment to dialogue and diplomacy as pathways to enduring peace and stability in the region," EAM Jaishankar shared on X.
Elbaour arrived in New Delhi for his inaugural visit to India to participate in the upcoming India-Arab Foreign Ministers' Meeting (IAFMM) set for Saturday.
Welcoming Elbaour, Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated on X, "A heartfelt welcome to Foreign Minister of Libya H.E. Eltaher S M Elbaour on his first visit to India. His involvement in the IAFMM and his engagements in New Delhi will foster positive momentum in advancing our bilateral relations."
India is poised to host the 2nd India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting on January 31. This meeting, being co-hosted by India and the United Arab Emirates, will see participation from Foreign Ministers of other Arab League Member States and the Arab League Secretary-General.
The second IAFMM is anticipated to build upon existing collaborations and deepen the partnership. It will be preceded by the 4th India-Arab Senior Officials’ Meeting.
This Foreign Ministers' gathering marks a decade since the last meeting, which took place in Bahrain in 2016. At that time, leaders pinpointed five priority areas for collaboration: economy, energy, education, media, and culture, proposing a series of initiatives across these sectors.
According to the MEA, "The India-Arab Foreign Ministers’ Meeting is the premier institutional mechanism driving this partnership, formalized in March 2002 when India and the League of Arab States (LAS) signed a MoU to institutionalize the dialogue process."
"A Memorandum of Cooperation was established for the creation of the Arab-India Cooperation Forum during the visit of the then Arab League Secretary-General Amre Moussa to India in December 2008, which was later revised in 2013 regarding structural organization. India holds Observer status with the League of Arab States, which comprises 22 member nations," it added.
