Washington, Jan 22 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S. Jaishankar expressed his pleasure in meeting US Secretary of State Marco Rubio for his inaugural bilateral meeting since taking office.

The meeting took place shortly after the gathering of the Quad Foreign Ministers, marking the first foreign policy interaction for both Rubio and the Trump administration.

Rubio also engaged with Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong and Japan's Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya shortly thereafter.

Australia and Japan are key treaty partners of the US, with Australia being part of the Five Eyes intelligence-sharing alliance, which includes Canada, Britain, and New Zealand. Japan maintains a security agreement with the US.

Jaishankar remarked, "Delighted to meet @secrubio for his first bilateral meeting after assuming office as Secretary of State."
