New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar is set to represent the nation and its citizens at the funeral of Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), who passed away in Dhaka on Tuesday.
As per the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), EAM Jaishankar will travel to Dhaka on Wednesday to pay his respects at the funeral of the esteemed leader.
Khaleda Zia, aged 80, succumbed to her prolonged illness early Tuesday morning, as confirmed by the BNP party.
A statement from her party revealed that she passed away around 6 am at the Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where she had been receiving treatment for over a month.
She was admitted to the hospital on November 23 after experiencing severe complications related to her heart and lungs. Reports indicated that she was also fighting pneumonia in her final days. For 36 days, she was under careful medical observation, with doctors describing her condition as delicate.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed profound sorrow over the loss of Bangladesh’s former PM and the BNP chairperson, acknowledging her as a historic figure whose contributions to Bangladesh and its relations with India will be forever remembered.
"I am deeply saddened to hear about the passing of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia in Dhaka. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family and the people of Bangladesh," PM Modi noted in his message on X.
"As Bangladesh's first female Prime Minister, her significant contributions to the development of Bangladesh and India-Bangladesh relations will always be cherished. I remember our warm meeting in Dhaka in 2015. May her vision and legacy guide our partnership. May her soul find peace," he added.
Throughout her life, Khaleda Zia faced numerous chronic health issues, including liver cirrhosis, diabetes, arthritis, and long-standing complications affecting her kidneys, lungs, heart, and eyesight. Her treatment was managed by a team of specialists from both Bangladesh and abroad, including medical professionals from the United Kingdom, the United States, China, and Australia.
Earlier this month, there were discussions about transferring her overseas for advanced treatment; however, doctors ultimately advised against international travel due to her fragile state.
A prominent figure in history, Khaleda Zia was the widow of former President Ziaur Rahman and made history as Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister, serving two terms in office.
