New Delhi, Dec 30 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi conveyed his profound sadness on Tuesday regarding the passing of Begum Khaleda Zia, the former Prime Minister of Bangladesh and chairperson of the BNP. He acknowledged her as a pivotal figure in history, whose efforts in fostering her nation's development and strengthening India-Bangladesh relations will be eternally cherished.
In a message shared on X, PM Modi stated, “I am deeply saddened by the news of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia’s demise in Dhaka. My heartfelt condolences go out to her family and the people of Bangladesh.”
He continued, “As the first female Prime Minister of Bangladesh, her significant contributions to the progress of her nation and to India-Bangladesh relations will always be remembered. I fondly recall my meeting with her in Dhaka in 2015. May her legacy and vision continue to inspire our partnership. May her soul find peace.”
Begum Khaleda Zia passed away early on Tuesday morning at the age of 80 after battling a prolonged illness, as confirmed by her party. The Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) stated that she died at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka, where she had been receiving treatment for over a month.
“Our Chairperson and former Prime Minister, the revered national leader Begum Khaleda Zia, has left us today at 6:00 am, shortly after the Fajr (dawn) prayer,” the party announced. They expressed their sorrow, stating, “We pray for her soul's peace and urge everyone to join us in offering prayers for her.”
Khaleda Zia had been admitted to the hospital on November 23 due to severe complications related to her heart and lungs. Reports indicated that she was also dealing with pneumonia in her final days. For 36 days, she was under constant medical observation, with her condition described as delicate.
Throughout her life, the former Prime Minister faced numerous chronic health issues, including liver cirrhosis, diabetes, arthritis, and extensive complications affecting her kidneys, lungs, heart, and eyesight. A team of international specialists, including doctors from the UK, the US, China, and Australia, managed her treatment.
Earlier this month, there were discussions about transferring her abroad for more advanced care; however, medical professionals ultimately advised against it due to her fragile state.
The widow of former President Ziaur Rahman, Khaleda Zia was a trailblazer as Bangladesh’s first female Prime Minister, serving two terms in office.
