Dhaka, Dec 30 (NationPress) Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the interim government in Bangladesh, expressed his profound sorrow on Tuesday regarding the passing of Khaleda Zia, the nation's inaugural female Prime Minister.

Zia, who served as Prime Minister three times and was the Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), passed away early Tuesday morning at the age of 80 following a lengthy illness.

In his condolence message, the Chief Advisor remarked that with the departure of Khaleda Zia, the country has lost a significant protector.

"I am deeply saddened and grief-stricken by her death," he stated.

Yunus emphasized that Khaleda Zia was not just a political party leader; she embodied a crucial chapter in Bangladesh's history.

This month, the government had designated her as a Very, Very Important Person (VVIP) of the State.

The Chief Advisor highlighted that her contributions to establishing democracy and fostering a multi-party political environment would be remembered eternally.

"Through her steadfast leadership, the nation continually emerged from undemocratic circumstances and was motivated to reclaim its freedom. Her contributions to the country and its citizens will always be honored," he added.

Yunus further noted that the nation has lost a seasoned and proven stateswoman with her passing.

"Despite differing political views, her extensive political journey dedicated to the nation's welfare, her people-centric leadership, and her unwavering determination consistently illuminated the path. With her departure, the country has indeed lost an experienced and established stateswoman," he stated.

Yunus recounted that following the death of Zia's husband—former President, Army Chief, and courageous freedom fighter Ziaur Rahman—she entered politics in 1982. Her strong leadership was pivotal in overthrowing the nine-year-long autocratic reign of HM Ershad," he mentioned.

The Chief Advisor further asserted that many of Khaleda Zia's initiatives propelled the nation forward. He pointed out that she introduced free education and stipends for girls, marking a significant milestone in advancing women's education in Bangladesh.

Khaleda Zia achieved remarkable success in her political career, remaining undefeated in all elections.

"From 1991 to 2001, she was elected from five different parliamentary constituencies. In 2008, she contested three seats and emerged victorious in all," he noted.

The Chief Advisor added that upon being elected Prime Minister in 1991, she "laid a strong foundation for the country's economy" through economic liberalization.

He further stated that during Sheikh Hasina's administration, Khaleda Zia stood as a distinctive symbol of resistance and struggle.

"Her unwavering stance inspired the nation throughout an extended period of struggle," he remarked.

Yunus asserted that Khaleda Zia's political success led her to become a "victim of extreme political vengeance."

"She was sentenced to 17 years in prison in fabricated cases and endured prolonged periods of incarceration," he explained.

The Chief Advisor extended heartfelt condolences to the grieving family of Khaleda Zia and to the leaders and activists of her party.

He also urged the citizens of the country to uphold peace and tranquility.
