Is Japan's Hostile Stance Making Agreements with Russia Impossible?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Moscow, Feb 20 (NationPress) Japan has adopted a hostile position towards Russia, making it improbable for the two nations to forge any agreements under the present circumstances, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated on Friday.
“Tokyo's unfriendly stance towards our nation means that, naturally, without altering the dynamics of our relations, it’s unlikely that any agreements can be achieved,” Peskov mentioned, as reported by RIA Novosti.
Earlier, Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi expressed during a policy speech in the lower house of parliament that Japan aims to establish a peace treaty with Russia, despite the ongoing tensions in bilateral relations.
The relationship between Russia and Japan has been long clouded by the lack of a formal peace treaty following World War II, reported Xinhua News Agency. Following Japan's implementation of multiple rounds of sanctions against Russia concerning Ukraine, the Russian Foreign Ministry declared on March 21, 2022, that it would halt peace treaty discussions with Tokyo.
In a parallel development, South Korea lodged a protest against Japan's revived territorial claims over the islets situated between the two nations, known as Dokdo in South Korea and Takeshima in Japan.
The South Korean foreign ministry issued a statement condemning Japan’s renewed assertions of unjust territorial claims during the foreign policy address by its foreign minister in the Diet.
The ministry demanded an immediate retraction of such claims, asserting that Japan's baseless assertions will not influence South Korea’s sovereignty over Dokdo.
It reiterated that South Korea will firmly counter any provocations from Japan, emphasizing that Japan must recognize that its repeated unjust claims over Dokdo, which is indisputably an integral part of South Korean territory historically, geographically, and under international law, will not contribute to fostering a future-oriented relationship between Seoul and Tokyo.
