Why Did South Korean President Dismiss the Korea Forest Service Chief?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, Feb 21 (NationPress) The office of South Korea's President Lee Jae Myung has officially relieved Kim In-ho, the Minister of the Korea Forest Service, from his position following his involvement in an unlawful act, as stated by the presidential office on Saturday, without further details.
According to the announcement, "We have determined that the minister of the Korea Forest Service caused significant disruption by breaching existing laws, leading to his dismissal from the role," the presidential office conveyed.
Although specifics regarding the law Kim violated were not disclosed, the office cautioned that it would respond firmly to any future legal violations by senior officials, as reported by the Yonhap News Agency.
Later that same day, police confirmed that Kim had been charged with driving under the influence.
Kim allegedly crashed into both a bus and another vehicle while impaired, at an intersection in the Bundang district of Seongnam around 10:50 p.m. on Monday, as per the Bundang Police Station in Gyeonggi Province, located south of Seoul.
Reports suggest that Kim disregarded traffic signals before colliding with other vehicles. Fortunately, there were no reported injuries, but Kim's blood alcohol level was found to be above the threshold for license suspension, according to police.
"We intend to investigate the specific details of the incident once we arrange to summon the suspect," police officials remarked.
A former environmental professor, Kim was appointed to this position in August after his tenure as the vice chair of the ruling Democratic Party's policy committee.
